Referring to its textbook, Mark Twain wrote, “Of all the strange and frantic and incomprehensible and uninterpretable books which the imagination of man has created, surely this one is the prize sample.” Instead Christian Science substitutes a vague pantheism. It rejects the belief in a personal God, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the existence of sin and the devil, the Resurrection, and heaven and hell. It borrows heavily from the Christian vocab-ulary but denies all the fundamental Christian dogmas. Quimby was a hypnotist and faith healer who had previously treated Eddy and had won from her adoration and published endorsements. Of its authorship she said, “I should blush to write a Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as I have, were it of human origin, and I, apart from God, its author but as I was only a scribe echoing the harmonies of heaven in divine metaphysics, I cannot be super-modest in my estimate of the Christian Science textbook.” In actual fact this work, considered by her followers to be of equal importance to the Bible, is of human origin.
